Right now, 1 in 3 U.S. students is behind grade level—and the gap is growing. But together, we can build a brighter future for our children, our workforce, and our communities.

First Book, Games & Learning, the A. L. Mailman Family Foundation, and Begin have joined forces to launch an ambitious effort: Bridge the learning gap for 10 million young children by 2030. We work with partners who care about kids by:

This initiative began as a National Science Foundation-funded research project in 2020. With proven platforms, trusted distribution, and evidence-based tools, we are ready to scale impact—fast.

Why Now?

In June 2025, 36% of students in U.S. public elementary schools were behind grade level and the gap is growing wider. Falling behind in early grades has a lifelong impact on kids — making them less prepared for a future career and putting stress on their families and their communities.

Healthy screen time options meet families where they are, and 3 out of 4 parents see their potential for learning. But 80% of parents are concerned about screen time choices. Connecting families with evidence-based games, apps, and other digital tools seizes an opportunity to bridge the learning gap.

Within months, we can deliver life-changing educational resources to millions of children. By 2030, we can close the gap for 10 million students in preschool through fifth grade.
